The customising service

Eight things Spelsberg can change, and where each one happens

Everything starts from an enclosure that already exists and has already been tested. Some of it is done in Telford, some at the factory in Schalksmühle — which is the main thing that decides how quickly you get it.

Digital printing

Telford

Full-colour UV printing straight onto the enclosure — logos, legends, warnings, connection diagrams, QR codes, photographic images and gradients. Far harder-wearing than a label, because there is nothing to lift or rub off.

CNC machining

Telford

Openings, holes and threads cut to your drawing on CNC-controlled milling centres. Because the machines are flexible rather than tooled, small quantities are worth doing — there is no batch you have to reach first.

Assembly & populating

Telford

The bench work done before it ships: functional elements bonded in, assemblies installed, electrical components wired. Up to and including finalisation and switchgear production, tested before it leaves.

Prototypes & 3D development

Schalksmühle

Prototypes built up in thin layers of light-curing plastic by the Polyjet process, in materials close enough to the real thing to be milled, impact-tested and metallised — so you can test the part, not just look at it.

Custom product development

Schalksmühle

When nothing in 4,000 products is close enough, development starts with a three-dimensional CAD model built from your requirements. Modular tooling keeps a tailor-made enclosure far quicker and cheaper than it sounds.

Special colours & materials

Schalksmühle

Colour mixed into the moulding, or painted onto a standard catalogue enclosure — for circuit identification, for blending into an installation, or simply because it should be your colour and not grey.

Testing laboratory

Schalksmühle

Spelsberg's own laboratory tests customised products, not only catalogue ones — ingress of dust and water, impact, heat and fire resistance, voltage and shock protection, cover tensile strength. Audited annually by VDE and UL.

Packing to your spec

Schalksmühle

How it arrives is part of the job. Covers and bases separated, loose packed for your line, boxed in your own cartons under your own labels, or split across several delivery addresses.

The easiest way to start

Have a free sample made, before you decide anything

You can hold it, fit it to the gear, show it to whoever signs things off, and check the finish in the light it will actually live in. There is no charge, no minimum, and no obligation to order afterwards.

  • Send us your logo or artwork and we’ll print it on a real enclosure
  • Or take a standard enclosure to check it against the gear before you commit
  • Printed samples go out within 24 hours

Before you get in touch

Four things people check first

Does modifying the enclosure affect the IP rating?
It depends on how the modification is made — which is the reason to have it machined rather than drilled on site. Spelsberg runs its own testing laboratory, certified to DIN EN 60670-1, 60670-22, 60529 and UL and audited annually by both VDE and UL, and it tests customised products as well as catalogue ones. Tell us at enquiry stage if the rating has to be evidenced and we'll confirm what can be verified for your modification.
What's the minimum order?
One. Printing and CNC machining both start at a single unit, because we are modifying an enclosure that is already made and already tested rather than tooling a new one. The exception is colour mixed into the moulding, which needs roughly 500 to 2,000 units depending on the size of the enclosure — below that we paint instead.
How long does it take?
A free printed sample goes out within 24 hours, and printed production work is typically complete within a week, because the printing happens in Telford alongside the stock rather than in Germany. Machining, assembly and anything made at the factory are quoted job by job — tell us the date you are working to and we will tell you straight away if it is achievable.
What do you need from me to start?
Less than you would think. Artwork as a PDF, AI, EPS or SVG; drawings as DXF, DWG, STEP or PDF. If you have neither, a dimensioned sketch or a photo with a ruler next to it is enough for us to come back with something — plenty of jobs start exactly that way.
