Do you need a ventilation system in an electrical enclosure?

Short answer

A ventilation system is worth fitting where an enclosure faces damp conditions, fluctuating temperatures, or houses many components in a small space — all situations that cause condensation or overheating. Promoting air circulation reduces condensation risk while maintaining ingress protection. Our AK range uses registered Air-Technology, which delivers a high air exchange rate with pressure equalisation to prevent condensation and excessive heat, while protecting circuits from water, dust and foreign particles in line with IP65.

A ventilation system is not essential in every enclosure, but it can be extremely valuable in optimising the operating conditions and service life of the electrical equipment the enclosure protects. Two situations in particular make it worth specifying:

  • Damp environments characterised by highly fluctuating temperatures, where a solution that promotes air circulation reduces the risk of condensation, in line with ingress protection (IP) requirements.

  • Small enclosures containing many components, where a source of fresh air coming in is beneficial in preventing overheating.

The most suitable option for air ventilation within our product portfolio is the AK range, which leverages our registered Air-Technology. This offers a high air exchange rate, together with pressure equalisation, in order to prevent condensation and excessive heat generation. The system also protects circuits from water, dust and foreign particles, in line with IP65 standards. There is more information on Air-Technology and our AK range of enclosures at https://www.spelsberg.co.uk/onepager/ak-the-distribution-board/

The Air-Technology elements are included in any AK enclosure, but we are also able to fit them to other products and series, including existing units you may already have. Our Product Finder at https://www.spelsberg.com/product-finder/ lists our ventilation element sets, seals and other accessories. Where a standard option will not do, we can develop custom solutions to address your specific needs.
