Outdoor installations of enclosures can be particularly challenging, as a number of environmental factors can affect the performance of electrical boxes. To select a suitable solution it is important to evaluate the particular environmental conditions and the enclosure’s specifications.
A good backbone is provided by DIN VDE 0100-ff standards, which discusses the key requirements for electronic components with nominal voltages up to 1000 V. In addition, exposure to direct sunlight, i.e. UV radiation, operating temperatures and water ingress in the form of condensation, precipitations and frost should be considered when installing enclosures outdoor.
Specific applications may also require protection against plants and/or mould growth, which could compromise the integrity and functionality of plastic enclosures. Besides, if it is necessary to install electrical systems in areas where hazardous or harsh chemicals are present, shielding mechanisms are necessary. For example, the use of rugged materials may be required, such as glass reinforced polyester (GRP) in corrosive environments.
