In the UK, camping and caravan sites are afforded their own section in the BS7671:2018 wiring regulations issued by the IEEE, primarily due to the more complex earthing arrangements that are required. However, there are also additional challenges relating to the outdoor environment that also need to be considered.

Enclosures are used throughout caravan and camping sites, both inside permanent buildings and outside, where they are exposed to a more challenging environment. The most obvious application is housing the electrical distribution equipment for the caravan hookups, which means they are exposed to the elements as well as accidental knocks.

Many sites will have external site lighting and lampposts, which again may require enclosures to house electrical joints or equipment such as daylight sensors. For all the external applications, the enclosures need to have a minimum ingress protection rating of IP44 to prevent water from coming into contact with the electrical conductors. In addition, they need to have a minimum impact protection rating of IK08, as per BS EN 62262.
